CKC Challenge #3 - Using Vellum

A few months ago, I received a wonderful package chock full of scrappy goodness from my fellow Master Forger and good friend, Lisa.  This was not just any package as it traveled all the way from Germany and included lovely doilies, sequins, rare papers I couldn't find here in the US and luscious gold foil vellum!  I am such a lucky girl to have so many scrappy angels in my world.  Thank you, Lisa!

So, when it came time to complete Challenge #3, I knew I had to use my gold foil polka dot paper that I had added to my August Kit, "Red Geranium".  It mimicked a paper from the Studio Calico kit and would more than satisfy the vellum challenge, but what would I do with it?

I thought and thought.

I searched Pinterest.

I perused galleries.

I punched circles from it.

I thought about making a pocket.

And then I realized, after all that thinking, that the vellum was gorgeous enough on its own.  Truly.  So, here you have it.  My vellum challenge.  Just a simple photo mat, but it adds so much to the layout.

My scrap bestie, Leslie always says, "Let the patterned paper do the work".  So I'm tweaking that mantra to "Let the luscious vellum do the work"!

No sense in re-inventing the wheel.

Have fun scrapping and remember not to over think it :)

CKC Challenge #2 - Using a Sketch

While I didn't make the deadline for Challenge #2 to add to the CKC post, I am determined to complete all of the challenges one way or the other this month.  The sketch from October Afternoon appealed to my scrappy design sense and made the process pretty easy.  Here's the sketch:

And here's my layout using it and my "Red Geranium" August Kit.

Our weather this summer has been stellar, so having this outdoor space has been a real treat.

Thanks for taking a peek!

King of the "Tuts"

Over at CKC, the Master Forgers often refer to the Tutorials post as the "tuts".  Always makes me chuckle as it makes me think of King Tut and that silly Steve Martin song from the 1970's!  Anyhow, I do have a small forgery to share with you, but I also have just a bit of general counterfeiting advice for you as well.

First for the forgery.  I had a "thing" for the cloud paper with the smiley faces.  Remember this piece from the Studio Calico "Penny Arcade" kit?
                                                                                              HERE

Seeing that piece of paper made me say, "Awwwwww!"  So easy to forge!  White paint, pink chalk, a marker and some rub-ons was all that was needed to create this version.

Not exactly the same, but a close runner-up!

If you didn't see, I already used it for Challenge #1.

Now, for my King of the "Tuts" advice.  Use the tutorials as a way to open your mind to endless forging possibilities.  You may not have black rub-ons like I used above, but maybe you have a 12x12 printer that could just print out the text.  You may not have a certain punch a Master Forger uses to create a copy-cat embellishment.  To go out and purchase something for the sole purpose to forge may be silly.  You might as well just go buy the ORIGINAL embellishment!  However, substituting something you do own to make it work creates something unique that is inspired by the original.  Just keep an open mind and make it work.  It is then that the creative juices really start flowing.

We hope these monthly posts help you create amazing embellishments and papers from your stash -whether copied directly (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all!) or simply inspired by.  Be sure to share your creations over on Mr. Linky!

Happy Scrapping!

Counterfeit Kit Challenge August Reveal and Blog Hop

Hello there.  I'm guessing you stopped by for a bit of kit inspiration?  You've come to the right place!  This month over at Counterfeit Kit Club we are using the "Queen Mother" of all kit clubs as our inspiration.  Yes, that's right!  STUDIO CALICO.  I have a confession to make.  I want to like their kits.  I've tried to like their kits.  However, I don't always get all the fuss that is made over their kits.  I certainly don't like them enough to have one come to my doorstep every month.  Now, don't get me wrong...I have ordered from SC and enjoy many of their products.  When I'm in a big box store or a local scrapbook store and see Studio Calico products, I take notice and even buy, but I guess I like to pick and choose my own supplies.  I guess that's why I've never taken the plunge into the world of ANY kit club.  So, that brings us to our inspiration this month, "Penny Arcade".  This is just one of many options, so be sure to check out the link below.

An unusual mix of color and pattern, but I'm up for trying something new.  I can "shop" my stash and create a kit that will suit me.  I used the red color as my main source of inspiration to create...

Let's see my take on the paper...

Strong pops of red are evident in my paper choices.  Feathers and bold black fonts are an important part of the inspiration, so in go the bold black word stickers and the soft blue paper with the white feathers and red berries.  A yellow crepe paper border was shown, so I included a yellow ombre crepe paper piece that I had been hoarding from a Dear Lizzy paper pad.

Accents in gold and vellum mimic the gold and white polka dot paper.  Map paper has become a staple in my stash these days and SC seems to agree. The bold Amy Tan Thicker words were a purchase I did make with this kit in mind.  I don't usually do that, but thought they seemed so different.  It will take careful placement to pull those off...wish me luck!

Now on to the embellishments...

See those Distress Inks?  I used those as my color palette (which, of course, were derived from the papers) when choosing my embellies.  Red cherry flair, STUDIO CALICO polaroid frames, and a little red Radio Flyer wagon (awwwww!) are just some of the goodies included in my tray.  I'll let you study the rest to discover my other additions.

Ok then...DARLING!  It's time for you to finish the hop (Jemma is up next!) and then get working on your kit.  Remember, we don't NEED fancy schmancy Studio Calico to build a kit for us - we can build one from our own fabulous stash that is completely unique!

A Warm Welcome to our Guest Designer, Sherri!
